Back in 2018, Instagram rolled out a little thing called IGTV– an entirely separate (but integrated) platform soley for video sharing. Now, content creators have up to one hour to share their latest and greatest news. 

Ok, so that’s all fine and dandy. But what does it mean for brands? Does IGTV really help with marketing?

Although many may think the newest Instagram feature is geared towards influencers, plenty of brands use IGTV successfully. Take Warby Parker for example. They primarily use IGTV to reveal their new products in a fun way. They even have guests like Jimmy Fallon help with their reveals. 

If your a brand selling something other than a physical product, you should use Hootsuite’s IGTV for inspiration. Hootsuite is a social media management platform, and since what they have to sell isn’t something physical, a great way to build brand awareness and life-long fans is to provide them with knowledge. So, if you’re a company like Hootsuite try imparting some (but not too much) of your knowledge via IGTV. And be sure to make it fun, like this video they did for Hootsuite Academy.

Timing is Everything

Like we said earlier IGTV video can be up to an hour long. Think of all the possibilities! 

“But wait,” You interrupt, your brow furrowed with worry. “Aren’t social media videos supposed to be between 30 to 90 seconds?”

Right you are, reader! However, there is something magical about IGTV. Because users use the IGTV tab expecting longer videos, it’s okay to make them longer. 

Of course, this all depends on the type of video you are posting. And keep in mind, if your account isn’t verified, your IGTV video can only be 10 minutes long. 

So, what’s the best length for your IGTV posts? We say around 2 minutes. Of course, it depends on the content you’re posting, but 2 minutes seems to be that sweet Goldilocks spot- not too short, not too long.
