The Goldilocks of Explainer Video Companies
Alright, time to get honest with you. We’ve been in the Explainer Video business for a while now, so you can assume we’ve seen it all. But one thing we’ve gone too long without addressing is *pricing*.
Nowadays, you can get a ‘customized’ video anywhere from $100 to $100,000, and with such a large difference in pricing, it’s no wonder everyone is wondering what that perfect price point is. The way we see it here at Digital Brew, is there are 3 categories you can break Explainer Video Companies into.
1. The Cheap Guys
Do you ever see those ads on Google that say “Custom Explainer Videos $229” or even “$155 Animated Explainer Video”? Yes, as you may have guessed, that is much too cheap for a fully-customized explainer video. Not to mention one that looks good and represents your brand well.
You may wonder how production studios can charge so little and still provide some type of product. Well most “Cheap Guys”, as we’ve dubbed them, don’t do any of the work themselves. Outsourcing is the name of the game for them, and typically to other countries that may not speak english, and thus might not be able to clearly produce the message you’re looking for.
How do they keep their business running when they charge next to nothing? They’re popping out videos left and right. That means their editing process is done way too quickly to check for quality control, and thus your “final product” is nowhere near finished.
When dealing with the cheap guys, you have to remember you’re getting what you paid for. So don’t expect to get a high-quality, branded video for anything under $8K.
2. The Expensive Guys
So, you know you’ve got to spend some money to get a beautiful, quality video, but how much is too much? At what point are you just paying for the brand name of the studio rather than the actual video? One of the best ways to to price check a company is through research. Find a few video companies with similar work and compare pricing. Anything above $40k is too steep a price, and you should consider hunting for other production studios you like.
Another way to determine if you’re being overcharged for an explainer video is to ask for the scope of services. You should be able to clearly see where your funds are going, but most importantly you should be able to understand why a studio is charging as much as they are.
3. The Goldilocks Guys
You know the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, right? Well, the perfect explainer video company is somewhat like that. Not too cheap and not too expensive- just right. There’s a sweet spot when it comes to pricing animated explainer videos, so much so that you can tell the type of quality you’ll get just based off of how much it will cost you. A high quality branded animated explainer will cost you anywhere from $7k to $20k, depending on the art and animation style, length, and whether the video has characters or not and whether or not it has 3D animation.
A great animated explainer video is an investment, and companies looking to up their marketing game with one should go into the process knowing this. Sure, you can spend $150 on a quick and cheap animation, but do you really want that representing your brand? Plus, the chances of you wasting your time and money having to redo it are pretty high. On the other hand, don’t think that overspending on a video always means you’ll have the best quality. Make sure you know when you’re being up-charged for a studio’s brand name.
