Spotify & Cash Money Records: A New Cash Order
March 5, 2020
On February 20th, Spotify released the first part of its exclusive docuseries, New Cash Order. As part of Spotify’s RapCaviar Playlist, this new 4-part series follows the story of Cash Money Records’ beginnings and rise to fame.
Cash Money is a huge name in hip-hop, and may bring popular artists to mind such as Birdman, Lil Wayne or Nicki Manaj. However, they’ve got a lot more going on than just that.
Cash Money’s Rise to Fame
In 1991, brothers Ronald “Slim” and Bryan “Birdman” Williams began their dream of helping themselves and others “out of the slums and into a positive way of life” by creating the record label, Cash Money Records.
The label started with a bang and only continued to grow well into the early 2000s, signing artists like B.G, Juvenile, Turk, and Lil Wayne. In 1998, Cash Money signed a $30 million distribution deal with Universal Records, which also helped catapult them into success.
The Golden Years
It was smooth sailing for Cash Money well into the mid 2000’s and 2010’s. In 2002, the song “Still Fly” by Big Tymers flew to #3 on the Hot Rap Tracks and was nominated for two Grammy Awards, solidifying the label in the Hip Hop World.
From there, Cash Money had nowhere to go but up. DJ Khaled, Nicki Manaj, Bow Wow, Drake, and even nu metal band Limp Bizkit all joined the Cash Money family in the early 2010s, making it one of the most successful record labels in hip-hop history.
A New Cash Order
Fast forward to the present day, and Cash Money Records is still thriving. Some of their newest artists include trail blazers like 9lokkNine, who received over 20 million views for his “10 Percent” music video, and Blueface who’s song “Thotiana” made it to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
With their all new docuseries on Spotify and a modern brand refresh, the top record label in hip-hop is ready to take on 2020 and beyond.
We at Digital Brew were lucky enough to help usher Cash Money Records into their new era by freshening up their brand with an animated logo. Check it out:
